Job Description

Cloud Infrastructure Engineer (senior or above)

Level is a learning technology company dedicated to helping students build real academic and life skills with confidence and joy. We combine proven curriculum principles with world class interactive design to make meaningful practice something students want to come back to, not something they struggle through.

We support what teachers, schools, and parents are already doing by increasing student engagement with high quality, standards aligned practice that reinforces classroom learning. That’s why we’re building:

For students: Rewarding and motivating learning experiences that meet students where they are to build real academic proficiency.

For educators: Tools that fit naturally into instruction and help students stay engaged while reducing teacher workload.

For parents: Activities that help your kid catch up or get ahead, build confidence, and minimize homework battles, whether learning at school or at home.

We are committed to helping every person maximize their potential and live a life of meaning. It’s a difficult problem that requires brilliant people and tremendous effort over time.

If you want to use your skills to make a difference for the world, we're seeking a Cloud Infrastructure Engineer (senior or above). You will be a key technical leader within the team responsible for architecting, building, and evolving the robust, scalable cloud infrastructure platform and tooling that powers our products' online features. You will drive the design, implementation, and operation of critical infrastructure components across our cloud environment (AWS, Azure, GCP), define and champion best practices for cloud infrastructure, CI/CD, observability, and security, and mentor other engineers on the team. Your work will directly impact the reliability, performance, and scalability of our services, ensuring an excellent experience for our players.

What You Will Do:

  • Lead the design, implementation, and management of highly available, scalable, and secure cloud infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) principles.

  • Drive strategic initiatives related to capacity planning, performance optimization, disaster recovery, and cost management for cloud resources.

  • Architect, build, and maintain robust, automated CI/CD pipelines to enable rapid and reliable software delivery.

  • Own the full lifecycle of key infrastructure services and tooling, from initial design and deployment through ongoing operation, maintenance, and evolution.

  • Collaborate closely with software engineering teams to understand their needs, define infrastructure requirements, and provide self-service capabilities where appropriate.

  • Develop, select, and manage advanced tooling for infrastructure provisioning, configuration management, monitoring, logging, alerting, and security posture management.

  • Leverage deep analysis of telemetry data (metrics, logs, traces) to proactively identify bottlenecks, drive strategic improvements, optimize performance and cost, and inform architectural decisions.

  • Mentor junior engineers, conduct code reviews, contribute to establishing team standards, and foster a culture of operational excellence, automation, and continuous improvement.

  • Act as an escalation point for complex production incidents, leading troubleshooting and remediation efforts.

Qualifications

Need to Have:

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience designing, building, managing, and operating complex, large-scale cloud infrastructure platforms (AWS strongly preferred; significant Azure or GCP experience also considered).

  • Deep understanding and extensive practical application of Infrastructure as Code (IaC) principles and tools (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation, Pulumi, AWS CDK).

  • Strong expertise in containerization and orchestration technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes - EKS, AKS, GKE). Proven experience deploying, managing, and scaling containerized applications.

  • Proficiency in scripting and automation using languages such as Python, Go, or Bash.

  • Solid understanding and practical experience with core networking concepts (VPC, subnets, routing, DNS, Load Balancing, Firewalls, VPNs) and security best practices within a cloud environment.

  • Proven experience designing, building, and managing robust CI/CD pipelines using tools like GitHub Actions, Jenkins, GitLab CI, or similar.

  • Proven ability to lead complex technical projects independently, from requirements gathering and design through implementation and operational handoff, in a fast-paced environment.

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts clearly to diverse audiences (technical and non-technical) and influence technical direction.

Nice to Have:

  • Relevant professional-level cloud certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Professional, AWS Certified DevOps Engineer - Professional, or equivalent in Azure/GCP).

  • Experience implementing GitOps workflows using tools like Argo CD.

  • Experience with Terraform automation and collaboration tools like Atlantis.

  • Experience with service mesh technologies (e.g., Linkerd) and/or advanced ingress controllers (e.g., Traefik) within a Kubernetes environment.

  • Experience contributing to or managing internal developer platforms (e.g., Backstage).

  • Deep experience with observability platforms (e.g., Datadog, Prometheus/Grafana) and familiarity with observability standards like OpenTelemetry.

  • Deep experience managing, scaling, and optimizing core AWS services such as EKS, RDS, DynamoDB, Lambda, and S3.

  • Understanding of distributed systems principles and challenges.

  • Contributions to relevant open-source projects.
