Job Description

AI Solutions Architect, Staff or Principal

Level is a learning technology company dedicated to helping students build real academic and life skills with confidence and joy. We combine proven curriculum principles with world class interactive design to make meaningful practice something students want to come back to, not something they struggle through.

We support what teachers, schools, and parents are already doing by increasing student engagement with high quality, standards aligned practice that reinforces classroom learning. That’s why we’re building:

For students: Rewarding and motivating learning experiences that meet students where they are to build real academic proficiency.

For educators: Tools that fit naturally into instruction and help students stay engaged while reducing teacher workload.

For parents: Activities that help your kid catch up or get ahead, build confidence, and minimize homework battles, whether learning at school or at home.

We are committed to helping every person maximize their potential and live a life of meaning. It’s a difficult problem that requires brilliant people and tremendous effort over time.

We are seeking an exceptional AI Solutions Architect, a strategic, hands-on technical leader with a builder’s mindset to define and own the end-to-end AI architecture and technical vision for our products. You will stay deeply connected to the state of the art in generative AI, multimodal models, AI agents, personalized learning systems, and responsible AI, then translate these advancements into coherent, scalable, production-ready architectures tailored to education.

This is a high-impact leadership + architecture role in a startup environment: expect to design systems, make critical architectural trade-offs, prototype key components when needed, drive technical direction, collaborate intensely with product and engineering, and ensure fast, value-driven delivery of AI-powered experiences.

Responsibilities:

AI Strategy & Architectural Vision - Define the long-term AI architecture and technology roadmap aligned with our educational mission. Stay deeply embedded in the evolving AI ecosystem, including foundation models, inference infrastructure, multi-agent systems, and AI-native product patterns and determine how they should be integrated into our platform and products.

System Design & Technical Leadership - Lead the design of robust, scalable, maintainable AI systems and integration patterns. Provide architectural guidance on model selection, inference strategies, data flows, latency/accuracy trade-offs, cost optimization, and responsible AI safeguards. Ensure designs support velocity to learning while remaining production-grade.

Prototyping & Delivery Focus - Personally contribute to high-leverage prototypes and reference implementations when needed to de-risk decisions or accelerate delivery. Partner closely with engineering to ship AI-driven features that meaningfully improve student outcomes and teacher efficiency.

Cross-Functional Influence - Work hand-in-hand with product, design, and engineering leadership to turn educational needs into concrete AI capabilities. Translate complex architectural choices into clear recommendations for non-technical stakeholders.

Responsible AI & Risk Stewardship - Champion architectural patterns that embed privacy-by-design, bias mitigation, explainability, accessibility, and compliance with education-sector regulations from the ground up.

Team Leadership - Provide strong technical leadership to engineers working on AI features. Over time, help shape and grow a compact, high-caliber group focused on applied AI architecture and feature delivery (initially less emphasis on building large R&D or deep infrastructure teams).

Qualifications:

  • Strong engineering foundation (formal or autodidact) with proven experience as a senior AI engineer or architect

  • Hands-on track record designing and shipping real AI-powered systems or features that reached users (commercial blockbuster experience is a bonus, not a requirement)

  • Deep expertise in modern AI/ML frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow, etc.) and current generative/multimodal techniques

  • Demonstrated ability to make pragmatic architectural decisions in fast-moving startup environments

  • Excellent ability to balance innovation speed with production-quality concerns (scalability, cost, reliability, ethics)

  • Strong communication skills, can articulate sophisticated architectural choices to engineers, product leaders, and executives alike

Bonus Points

  • Experience in Edtech or education-related AI projects.

  • Experience leading architecture in 0 to 1 or high-growth product environments.

  • Knowledge of ethical AI, data governance, and accessibility in learning tools.
